Mentoring Program For The Start Up

I consult a lot of companies, small and medium sized. These companies are from all kinds of industries. I let my clients be the experts of their skills, while I bring them what they are not skilled in, which is the art of doing business.

In this line of work, I have come to see there is a huge need for help in these areas for start up companies and that there are a lot of people who are looking for consulting help.

The challenge, however, is the obvious fact that most small start ups do not have abundant cash to pay their way for such consulting services.

Consultancy services from a talented business consultant can certain help the small start up get to a great business start sooner and help the business owner(s) avoid many of the pitfalls and help educate them as to how to handle their business for maximized growth and profits.

But with a start up, you typically do not have a lot of revenues or cash flow in the beginning. Good consultancy services will cost you from $395-$1,200 an hour, and can be even more for even higher tier services.

In other words, while the need is huge, the costs to hire a consultant is often cost prohibitive.

So I have pondered about this a lot. I wish to help as many people as possible and I wish to help especially hopeful start up business owners experience success. Business owners make way for jobs and thus provide livelihoods not just for themselves and their families, but also for many other people and their families. Therefore these are hugely important in our world.

Furthermore, I have personally been through many start ups myself and in that process many many expensive mistakes. Mistakes and costs that could have been avoided had I, myself at such time, had access to better guidance. I know the pain of losing a lot of money, on top of the money you don't have. I know about the many sleepless nights and the huge anxieties that the worries can bring.

I would love to help these hopeful start up business owners avoid some of those costly mistakes. I would like to help them to a better understanding of what to look for in the process of building a great business. But the challenge for me is, that I cannot reduce my hourly fee to something that a typical start up company can pay, so I have to find another way of providing much the same value, but as a lot smaller price point.

When I train business owners in person, there are some of the lessons or instructions to a valuable tool that I will have to provide several times over for the same client. This is perfectly natural. But in the realm of a typical consulting engagement that basically means more hours charged at a minimum rate of $495 or more. In other words, it can become very expensive very fast for the client.

Don't get me wrong, the value is there, and I have yet to see a client who did not make a very substantial positive return on their investment with my consulting services. So how much should I charge for this?

Well, as mentioned, a typical consulting engagement with clients regardless of industry runs at $100,000-$200,000. Longer ones have run north of $500,000. Once a typical consulting engagement is at its end, any further access to me would come at an additional $495 per hour or more (prices do vary), and typically no more additional content or lessons are provided outside of such continuing calls.

A MBA from any decent school would probably run you at $250,000 plus living expenses, travel expenses and the lost income you would otherwise have from working during same time. Most of my clients have told me, my teachings and helping them has been like receiving a full blown business education.

So I would venture to say, that I easily be charging upwards $100,000 or such a course. But I am not going to do that by a long shot. As stated right from onset, this is for start up companies and their business owners, and they typically have very limited resources to spare regardless of high a value they would get.

The smaller consulting engagements I have run, have been around $40,000 to $50,000, but even that would be prohibitive to a lot of people, and as I have said before, I would like to help as many people as possible.
